Overfishing-Wikipedia

Overfishing is a huge threat to our oceans and the world. The negative impact of overfishing has been going on for countless generations. 1/3 of the world's fisheries are in trouble because of this crisis. Still more are undocumented and therefor suggesting that we are in an even more deeper situation. This also reminds us that we are losing control of fisheries and the amount of fish they can catch. Fishing with nets is the main conflict. When fisheries (usually commercial fishing companies) use nets they catch a LOT of fish. Even though this might seem good, it is not. Most of the fish is wasted because of the huge amount. Because of this many species of fish are going extinct. This weakens and can destroy the oceans ecosystem and the worlds.

Another form of overfishing is called bycatch. Bycatch is when fisheries catch another animal. These animals could be small whales, dolphins, sharks, viquita's, and turtles. When this happens the animals can get severely injured or killed. Some fisheries discard nets in the ocean and other animals get tangled in them. This problem is not just deadly for fish, it is a killer for all wildlife.

5 ways to help while still eating seafood:

  1. Buy fish or other seafood from small sustainable businesses you've researched. (Wild caught with fishing line etc)

  2. Support positive bans toward overfishing.

  3. Don't waste fish you've bought

  4. Help local businesses!

  5. Avoid fish farms (These can spread diseases)
