Climate Change Care Tips

Updated: Aug 13, 2023

**Note: the following tips are in no particular order**

1. Recycle Aluminum: Aluminum is one of the most common elements in the world but it's slowly decreasing in abundance. Because of this it is even more important to recycle it. Not many people know that Aluminum is actually recyclable! Just make sure to rinse off any food residue so it doesn’t contaminate the recycle bin!

2. Meatless Mondays: You can love meat and care for our climate at the same time! By slowly reducing your meat intake you can save animals and resources! Farms that breed cows, pigs, chickens and other animals for meat use a lot of water and food, by participating in meatless Mondays you can save resources as well! Just think what an impact you make if one day of the week most people didn’t eat meat!

3. Turn Off Lights: This may seem like a simple thing but it is effective. When we forget to turn off lights we waste energy and overtime this builds up harmful activity towards climate change. Remember this includes light switches, lamps, and unplugging appliances when you aren’t using them.

4. Thrift Shop: Buying from stores that waste energy and products is never a good thing. A lot of the time we are all guilty of scrolling through online pages and buying more things than we really need: overflowing our closets, desks and storages. This way of shopping can be harmful to the environment because a lot of online shops use way too much packaging. There are some shops who are trying to lower the effects of packaging but it is always a good idea to thrift shop! Thrifting basically means that you buy clothes that others have worn lightly, and purchase them for a lower price because of this. These clothes are recycled so that you can reuse them!

5. Buy From Local Farmers/Markets: Big scale farming is a problem for our climate, so it's always good to buy from little independent farmers and markets. It’s great to give back to your community and support independent businesses as well. On top of this fresh local food is delicious and can be cooked up in so many ways. Just make sure that if you buy fish or seafood products that they are wild and line caught, as using huge nets to catch fish results in overfishing.

6. Compost: Composting is a great way to lower food waste, it also helps grow more seeds into healthy plants. If we put our food scraps in the compost bin we are helping to lower the amount of trash in our landfills, which helps with the amount of space on earth that is inhabitable for animals including us, AND helps lower the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.
