It might seem as if little kids can’t make an impact on the environment. But the truth is that children can help the world tremendously, and it all starts with education. Educating your kids is the most important step for them to understand what they can do to help the earth. Just sitting down to talk with your kids about the climate is one great step. By teaching your child that we can help stop the climate from warming and therefore animals from dying, you are already creating a climate conscientious kid.
Here are a few climate conscientious activities that teach kids about helping the earth.
1. Turning off the water while brushing teeth. Not only is this extremely simple, it is also effective. This small action teaches children to be mindful about using and conserving water.
2. Donate old clothes and toys. By donating clothes that are too small for your child or toys they don't use anymore you are helping the climate and other people. It teaches your kid about giving back to others and about reusing toys and clothes for a better cause.
3. Do DIY’s with your kids. Not only are crafts fun for you and your kids, they can also teach children important lessons and values about being kind to people, animals and the earth.
Here are some fun DIY activities to do:
Upcycle a bottle into a birdfeeder! There are a bunch of different DIY birdfeeders you can make out of old bottles. Just look one up on Youtube!
Decorate an upcycled flower pot and plant something! This DIY allows your kid to be creative while also exploring planting. You can use many old bottles and cans as your new flower pot.
Make your own garden! Your kids will love the fun activity and you can teach them about how growing your own food can help the environment!
4. Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Create this good habit early with your kid by reminding them to always turn off the lights when you aren’t using a room. Be a good role model for them too! By doing this simple step you will be teaching your child how to be more aware about energy efficiency and your electricity bill will go way down!
5. Bring your own water bottle and reusable bags. Ditch the plastic and bring a reusable water bottle instead! Make sure to always pack your kids their own water bottles. Also remember to teach your kids to always bring reusable bags. They will look up to you and what you do so remember to always remind them about caring for the environment.
6. Draw on both sides of the paper. Once you’ve taken up one side of the paper, remind your kids to flip it over and use the back especially if they are doodling for fun and to pass the time. This makes your child more aware about their effects on the climate.
7. Teach the effects of littering. Never allow your child to litter, even if it seems like a small deal. Make sure your kid knows how they are affecting animals and the climate when they litter. Instead, offer for your child to wait until the nearest trash can or to stick the garbage in their pocket until there is an available trash can. Also if you have a dog remember to always pick up their poop and to teach your children to do the same.
